Those who have been reading the blog for a while now know how important breast cancer awareness + breast cancer research is to me. If you’re a new reader, you can read more about why I’m so passionate about it here. It’s pretty amazing how far research and treatments have come in just 10 years. Though, of course, we all dream of a day when all cancers can be cured. To give you a bit of an idea of how far research has come, back when my mom had genetic testing after battling breast cancer (about nine years ago), there weren’t nearly as many known gene mutations as there are today. Today, with many more gene mutations known, many women with a family history of breast cancer choose to have genetic testing done so that they’re able to make short-term and long-term decisions for their health. If a gene mutation is found, a woman (or man!) may decide to have preventative MRI’s, a mastectomy, take preventative medications, etc. Knowledge is power and is empowering. If you have a family history of a particular type of cancer, I strongly urge you to see a genetic counselor to create a plan for yourself. If you’re worried about the cost, (trust me, I was too) most health insurance companies will cover this with a referral from your primary care doctor. If you have a primary care doctor who won’t take your concerns seriously, I strongly urge you to see a new doctor. You can read more about my family’s history of breast cancer and my experience seeing a genetic counselor for the first time, in this post.
There’s no doubt that this “pink movement” and the movement of spreading breast cancer awareness through the month of October has helped millions of women and men throughout the years. Many companies are choosing to donate a percentage of sales of a particular item towards breast cancer research or for breast cancer foundations that support patients and survivors. That being said, just because an item is pink and has breast cancer ribbons on it, doesn’t meant that proceeds will be donated. I share this with you all so that you’re aware of where your hard-earned money is going. There’s nothing worse than thinking that you’re donating to an amazing cause just to find out that someone is pocketing your money. Here are some things you should look for and/or think about when deciding to donate/purchase an item that is donating to breast cancer.
- What percentage of the sales are going to an organization/foundation?
- Is there a cap on how much money will be donated?
- What organization is the money going to?
- How will the organization spend the money?
I share these questions with you guys not to say which is right or wrong, but just to get you thinking a bit about where your money is or may not be going.
