Our new apartment in Maine is slowly coming together and is starting to feel like home. We’ve been here about two months now and have taken a slow, intentional approach to finding home decor that blends seamlessly with items we already own. You can read about our move here. I’m so excited to share our new living room furniture with you guys!
I will admit, Geoff did most of the research and then asked me if I liked things. A woman’s dream, right?! 😂 🙌🏻
Our New Living Room Furniture in Our New Apartment
We originally said that we weren’t going to buy any new apartment furniture since we’re hoping to buy a house in the next year or year and a half and we’re trying to save our pennies 🙏🏻 … But the more time we spent living in this space, the more we realized that our 8+ year old couch wasn’t going to work in this space.
Not only was it sinking to the floor (8+ years will do that lol), it just didn’t really work for the layout of our living room. Plus, now that we are in Maine near my family and friends, we wanted a place where they felt comfortable gathering in – so much of that is done on the couch!
Because of the the layout of the space, we decided that a sectional style couch would work best. Our old couch had an amazing run, though! it’s truly gotten its mileage – It had been to 4 apartments during its life. 😱
One of my favorite things about our living room is that when I look around, I see a mixture of decor that has been with us since we first moved in together, and new items that are kicking off our journey in Maine. I feel like that’s what a home should be. A place that feels lived in; a place where you feel comfortable and can make memories, while also thinking fondly of the memories you’ve already made in your space.
Okay, let’s get to the details of what we purchased!
New Couch
Geoff decided on a couch from Burrow and so far, we’re really happy with our decision. We went with the Black Nomad King Sectional in Crushed Gravel with Walnut Wood Legs. We also added the Moveable Chaise to make our couch feel more like a sectional and align more with the space. Fun fact: the chaise can actually be added to any section of the couch. We loved this feature because we have more flexibility with moving this couch to the next space we live in.
One of the deciding factors for us was the price. It’s a lot more affordable than similar style sectionals. Second, despite the price, it’s very durable. The frame is made of sturdy, precision milled Baltic Birch which prevents warping and the legs are made of responsibly-forested wood. The couch also has strengthened steel pins and galvanized latches. We were able to put the couch together easily, yet the latches felt heavy duty so the couch won’t give out on us.
As an added bonus, the fabric is scratch and stain resistant. No having to worry about spilling chocolate ice cream or red wine on the couch. Probably one of Geoff’s constant worries with our old couch 😂 . I can be a messy eater lol. If you have pets or kids, this sounds like even more of an added bonus!
I know this has been more recently talked about in the news, but we also feel really good about the fact that it doesn’t contain any PFCs. The fabric is completely non toxic with zero chemical additives or treatments and is free from dangerous formaldehydes. Admittedly, I hadn’t even thought about looking for a couch that was free from these things, so I love that they take the stance of offering fabrics that are comfortable and good for us, so I didn’t have to think about it after the fact.
The couch also comes in other colors. I happen to love Ivory (swoon!) and Charcoal, but we felt like Crushed Gravel tied into our kitchen and living room color scheme the best.
The couch came in about 7 boxes (lol) and each box was labeled so we knew exactly what each box contained. It came with thorough instructions of how to put the couch together and I have to say, it was really easy. It took us about 45 minutes to put together, and that’s only because one area gave us a bit of trouble because we read the instructions wrong.
And lastly, not sure if this is important to you or not, but this couch also has a phone charger built in!!! Yep, it has a built in USB charger and includes a 72″ power cord. Game changer if your phone is always hovering around 10% like mine 😂. It may not be our “forever couch” once we have a house, as we will probably want something a bit bigger, but if you’re in an apartment like us, I truly feel like it’s the perfect couch!
New Coffee Table
We got rid of our coffee table when we moved out of our apartment in Boston, so it was time for a new one. Originally, I wanted a circular coffee table with a lighter wood finish (something like this), but we decided that the lighter wood didn’t really work with the color of the floors and our tv console – and we couldn’t find one we liked within our budget!
Geoff decided on this coffee table (with my blessing!) and I absolutely love it. The color scheme ties in perfectly with our tv console and the legs of our couch. It’s great quality and is constructed of American Dark Walnut. It’s circular which I feel like breaks up the rectangles of the couch, tv console, and rug, and I love the fact that it has three legs. Definitely a style that’s trending right now.
New Lamp
One unexpected thing about our apartment? No overhead lights in the living room or guest bedroom. Kind of odd and definitely threw us for a loop on what to do. The living room is connected to our kitchen which has lighting, however, we still needed a bit more lighting for the living room.
I definitely miss just being able to flip a switch in the living room, but we decided on this lamp which hovers over the end of our chaise and I love that it adds just a little something extra to the space, while still being modern and minimalist. The only thing I don’t like about it is the hanging cord, but there’s not much we can control about that. I’m thinking about taping it to the backside so it’s more hidden!
New Rug
If you can only afford or desire to make one upgrade in your living room, I feel like getting a rug makes such an amazing impact to a space! A rug pulls together a space all while making it feel more home-y in just seconds. Not to mention, it feels great on your feet! Simply changing the color or fabric of a rug is also such a quick upgrade.
If you haven’t heard about it before, Rugs USA is a great place to buy affordable rugs and is where we got this rug. They constantly have sales so if you spot something you like, I recommend waiting till they’re running a sale.
I love this rug that we decided on! Since we have lots of greys and whites throughout our apartment (and blue pillows!), we thought this rug would make a nice addition with its blue accents. It looks very blue in the photos, but I would consider it more grey with blue accents vs. blue with grey accents. We’re still trying to get one of the corners to lay flat, but overall, love it so much!
