Ever wish you could make your curls or waves last longer? Only all the time if you’re like other people I know! But what if I told you there’s something specific and super easy you could be doing to make it happen AND that you can find everything you need exclusively at Walmart thanks to the TRESemmé Thermal Creations collection?! Yup, you’re in luck!
Today, I’m sharing one of my TOP methods for making curls and waves stay all day. They’re called pin curls, and I think you guys will be surprised at just how easy they are to create. While some may find it a bit more time consuming than creating everyday curls, half of the time it takes to create these is waiting for the curls to cool, so you’re free to go about your business and do other things while you wait – like doing your makeup, washing dishes, folding clothes, making a meal, or you name it!
Moral of the story, don’t let them intimidate you. Pin curls are actually really easy to create and when completed, will result in curls that last ALL DAY long. Yes, seriously. Plus, I get a little help from the TRESemmé Thermal Creations Ultra Power Hair Dryer, TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Balm, and TRESemmé Thermal Creations Blow Dry Accelerator that you can find exclusively at your local Walmart in the styling tools aisle. #TRESItUp

Pin Curls Hair Tutorial: How to Make Your Curls Stay All Day!
SO, what exactly are pin curls?! They’re exactly what they sound like. They’re curls that are pinned to lie flat across your head. With the curls pinned at your head, they’re able to cool in that position, resulting in bouncier curls that last much longer than typical curls.
I often put my hair in pin curls when I’m attending a wedding, holiday party, fancy event, or any other time I want my curls to last all day long! These will be great for the upcoming holidays, too. They give your hair that extra bounce and staying power. If you’re pressed for time, you can also do this on just the top layer of your head and still achieve this! When I’m short on time, I solely do the top layer.
Tools You’ll Need to Create Pin Curls on Your Own Hair:
- Blow Dryer
I used the TRESemmé Ultra Power Hair Dryer from Walmart that I found in the styling tools aisle. - Hair Straightener
I used the TRESemmé 1″ Ceramic Flat Iron from Walmart. You can use a hair straightener if you have any stubborn pieces that need to be straightened out. The crown of my head often needs a little bit of straightening out. However, if you have naturally straight hair, this won’t be needed. - Curling Iron
I like using a hair wand because I find it to be quicker, but feel free to use a regular curling iron too! - Bobby Pins
Or some type of hair pin/hair clip! I like bobby pins because they secure the tightest, but any clip will work. However, keep in mind that you may get creases in your curls if you use a snap clip. - Hair Brush
Hair Products / Styling Aids You’ll Need:
- TRESemmé Thermal Balm
This protects my hair from heat damage if I feel like using my blow dryer to give my hair a little extra volume. Plus, I love that it gives me just enough grip to create that long-lasting, perfect blow out. - TRESemmé Thermal Accelerator
To speed up the drying process. This has been a total game changer since my hair is so thick and typically takes forever to dry – even with a blow dryer! TRESemmé also has a Flat Iron Spray that’s perfect for protecting your hair before using a flat iron. - Light Hair Oil
I use this on my ends once the style is fully completed just to make my ends look a bit more healthy and blended with the rest of my hair. - Workable, Light Hair Spray
By workable, I mean one that is pretty light and can be worked through the hair. It won’t make your hair stuck in place or feel rock hard.
How to Create Pin Curls:
(I start on damp hair after shampooing and conditioning like normal. If you’ll be doing this on dry hair, feel free to skip ahead to the *).
Insider Tip: I find my curls last MUCH longer when I curl my hair after shampooing, conditioning, and drying my hair like normal. I love using dry shampoo on second day hair just as much as the next person (if you somehow don’t own it yet, it’s a must!), however, I find that my curls don’t last as long).
- After towel drying damp hair and combing out any tangles, put a dime sized amount of TRESemmé Blow Dry Balm in the palm of your hand and work throughout damp hair, making sure to start at the ends and work upward. Comb out hair one more time to ensure product is evenly distributed throughout.
- Spray a couple sprays of TRESemmé Blow Dry Accelerator and work through hair with hands. This will speed up your dry time!
- Blow dry hair as normal. I recently started using the TRESemmé Ultra Power Hair Dryer and I love it because it’s lighter than any other blow dryer I’ve ever owned before!
- *After thoroughly drying hair, section hair into sections. The more hair you have, the more sections you’ll create. I start by sectioning my hair into two sections (I put half up). Then, from what hair is half down, I’ll pull half my hair to the left side and half to the right side.
- Take a small strand of hair (the same size you would typically use when curling your hair as normal) and curl. For this style, I curl my hair by wrapping it around a hair wand. If you don’t have a hair wand, you can achieve the same result. Just wrap your hair around the outside of the curling iron without putting the clamp down.
- Hold the hair around the curling iron for about 5 seconds. When releasing from the curling iron, cup in your hand (as shown in the pictures). This is also a little trick that makes your curls hold longer, which I do every time I curl my hair (even when I’m not creating pin curls).
- When cupped in your hand, you may notice that the hair naturally falls into a circle like pattern. Continue to roll/shape into a circle and clip at the head.
- Repeat and continue to do the same process throughout your hair.
- After your whole head has been completed, spray a couple of spritzes of a light hairspray on your head.
- Let set for at least 10 minutes before taking out clips/bobby pins.
- Remove all bobby pins/clips and run hands through hair. If desired (I always do this), lightly brush through your curls to tame them a bit. If you don’t want to brush through your curls, run your hands through your hair to loosen up the curls a bit. They will look a little crazy when you first take the pins out! The above image is what my hair looked like without brushing through. I prefer a little bit of a more loose look, so I always brush my hair after.
- Follow with just the tiniest bit of a light hair oil on your ends. This makes your hair look more healthy and blends your ends into the rest of your hair.
Make sure to check your local Walmart for the TRESemmé products. They’re currently exclusive to Walmart – and since Walmarts are everywhere, chances are you can find one near you! 🙂
